Alex Young
27-Year-Old PitcherSP
2020 Fantasy Outlook
Young began the season in a long-relief role at Triple-A Reno before transitioning to the rotation, and while he didn't turn any heads there, injuries to Arizona's rotation ultimately paved the way for the lefty to make his major-league debut in June. He held his own across 15 starts and a pair of relief appearances following his promotion, compiling a 3.56 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 83.1 innings. While Young's numbers look solid on the surface, things aren't as rosy if you dig a little deeper. His 7.7 BB% was good but not great, while his strikeout (20.3%) and home-run rates (1.5 HR/9) left something to be desired. He had that HR/9 despite a groundball rate pushing 50%. On account of those peripherals, the estimators say the southpaw is a candidate to regress in his sophomore season, but Young should be in the running for a rotation spot and he's at least on the streaming radar. Young (2-4) gave up six runs on eight hits and a walk over 2.2 innings on Thursday, as the Diamondbacks fell to the Angels 7-3.
ANALYSIS
Making his sixth start of the season, Young lost his third straight and buoyed his season ERA to 5.44. Young's role is liable to change given his struggles of late.

How does Alex Young compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
