RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2017-18

Subscribe now to see our 2017-18 outlook.

2016-17

Grant arrived in Chicago this offseason as part of the Derrick Rose trade, and he'll battle for the backup point guard job behind veteran starter Rajon Rondo. As a rookie, Grant appeared in 76 games for the Knicks, averaging a modest 5.6 points, 2.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds while shooting 39.4 percent from the floor. Those numbers certainly weren't eye-popping, but Grant remains an intriguing project player, despite the fact that he turns 24 in October. At 6-foot-4, Grant has the size to defend both backcourt spots, which could ultimately solidify his place in the rotation, but he struggles as a shooter and knocked down just 22 of his 100 three-point attempts last season. He'll compete with fellow newcomers Isaiah Canaan and Spencer Dinwiddie for minutes behind Rondo, with Canaan, a much stronger outside shooter, posing the bigger threat of the two. Rondo is expected to shoulder a heavy workload, however, so Grant is unlikely to play enough minutes to be more than a deep bench player in most single-season fantasy formats.

2015-16

Selected 19th overall this summer and traded to the Knicks on draft night, Grant is coming off a senior season at Notre Dame that saw him average 16.5 points, 6.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 37 minutes per game across 38 appearances for the Irish. Ultimately, that production led to Grant being named a Consensus First-Team All-American at the point guard position, where he figures to help the Knicks mightily moving forward. Standing an athletic 6-5, Grant has great size for a guard in coach Derek Fisher's scheme and should offer an improvement on Knicks' veteran Jose Calderon defensively. Furthermore, Grant is gifted with outstanding court vision and displayed deep shooting range in college. Combined, that skill set could enable Grant to play at both guard spots for the Knicks as the season unfolds. While Arron Afflalo will almost certainly start at shooting guard, Grant is expected to push Calderon and Langston Galloway for the Knicks' starting point guard gig. Even if he doesn't win the position right away, Grant clearly has the most upside of that group, so fantasy owners would be wise to monitor Grant's early progress, as his matured game could make him an impact rookie performer.
