27-Year-Old ForwardF
Dallas Mavericks
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Finney-Smith will return to the Mavericks on a three-year, $12 million deal. The third-year forward averaged a career-high 7.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists with Dallas last season, logging 24.5 minutes per night in 81 appearances. After playing just 21 games the year prior due to tendonitis, it was encouraging to see Finney-Smith play the entire season -- the second time in three years he played at least 81 games. He's an above-average defender but a poor shooter, limiting his upside to rebounding and defensive stats. Though his minutes have increased in each of the past two seasons, he's likely to see those minutes go in the opposite direction, playing a backup forward role. Kristaps Porzingis should be healthy, and Tim Hardaway and Justin Jackson will be back to take playing time from Finney-Smith. He's not worth drafting in standard formats. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio

Dorian Lawrence Finney-Smith was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Desiree Finney-Jones. His brother, Ben Finney, played basketball at Old Dominion. Finney-Smith attended and played basketball for I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth. As a junior, he averaged 19.7 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks per game. The following season, he posted per-game averages of 18 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.8 blocks. Finney-Smith led his school to back-to-back Group AAA championships, as well as Eastern Region and District titles. He finished his high school career as a two-time VHSL Class AAA Player of the Year and first-team all-state, all-region, All-Tidewater and all-district. He also earned All-Tidewater Player of the Year as a junior and co-Player of the Year as a senior. In his brief time as an NBA player, Finney-Smith has found ways to give back to the community. He helped found the Finney Family First Foundation (https://www.instagram.com/finneyfamilyfoundation/) with the mission to "inspire the youth to become productive members of society by providing service to the community." For four consecutive years he has returned to to Portsmouth to host the foundation's annual Community Love Day. Finney-Smith has also given much of his time working with and inspiring youth in the Dallas area. Learn more about Finney-Smith by following him on Twitter (@doefinney_10).

College/International Summary

The collegiate career of Finney-Smith began at Virginia Tech so that the forward could stay in state to play hoops. He had a solid campaign for the Hokies with 6.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. However, he decided to transfer to Florida after coach Seth Greenberg was fired. He sat out the 2012-13 season before joining a team that would make its way to the Final Four. The 6-foot-8 forward came off the bench in support of Casey Prather and Patric Young and supplied 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest. He scored 16 points in the first-round win over Albany and snagged eight boards to help the Gators beat Pitt. Finney-Smith would blossom into a star in his junior and senior seasons, but he would not return to the Big Dance. He provided 13.1 points and 6.2 rebounds as a junior. The big man also hit 42.6 percent of his three-point attempts. The Gators finished 8-10 in the SEC in what would be Billy Donovan's final season. Coach Mike White took over in 2015-16 and Finney-Smith had eight double-doubles, but the Gator profile was not quite good enough to get back to the NCAA Tournament. The team won two games in the NIT and Finney-Smith had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Ohio State.

Scores 16 points in Sunday's loss
FDallas Mavericks
August 31, 2020
Finney-Smith contributed 16 points (6-11 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 2-3 FT), six rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes during Sunday's 111-97 loss to the Clippers.
ANALYSIS
Finney-Smith battled through a hip injury in Sunday's losing effort, something that has been bothering him for quite some time. On the whole, this would have to be viewed as his best fantasy season to date. He ends as a top-150 player in standard leagues. However, given that was with over 30 minutes per game, his ceiling should be viewed as right around this number.

During the Mavericks' opening seeding game in the bubble against the Rockets, Finney-Smith recorded a season-high five assists. He repeated that mark Aug. 8 in a win over the Bucks in which he also posted a career-high 27 points and a career-best six three-pointers. Between those matchups on Aug. 4, Finney-Smith grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and scored 16 points in a win over the Kings. The versatile forward started all six Mavericks' playoff contests against the Clippers and averaged 10.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 31.8 minutes per post-season match-up.

2018

Finney-Smith's third NBA season represented a resurgence after injuries cost him much of the prior campaign. He played in a team-leading 81 games (26 starts) and set a new career high in minutes per game with 24.5. Finney-Smith also improved drastically as a shooter, blowing away his previous numbers in field-goal percentage (43.2) while also setting career bests in points per game (7.5), 3-point percentage (31.1), rebounds per game (4.8) and steals per game (0.9). For the third straight year, he shot north of 70 percent from the free-throw line, posting a 70.9 percent mark. On Nov. 2, the he scored a career-high 19 points off the bench against the Knicks. Finney-Smith grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds during an Apr. 7 victory over Memphis. On Apr. 9, the Florida product posted 15 points and 10 boards in a win over Phoenix. All in all, Finney-Smith collected three double-doubles among five games with double-digit rebounds. The defensive-minded forward racked up 18 games with two or more steals and eight games with at least two blocks.

2017

A year after appearing in 81 games as a rookie, Finney-Smith played in just 21 games for the Mavericks in 2017-18 as he dealt with tendinitis in his left knee. When he was on the court, the Florida product played 21.3 minutes per night and made 13 starts. Finney-Smith managed 5.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, which were all new career highs. He shot 38.0 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from 3-point range. Finney-Smith was able to put together some impressive stat lines in his limited run, scoring in double figures five times and notching his first career double-double. That came Apr. 6 against the Pistons, when he scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Finney-Smith grabbed five or more rebounds on six occasions. Encouragingly, the 24-year-old finished the season strong after missing so much time. He scored in double figures in each of the final four games of the campaign, averaging 13.3 points over 34.8 minutes per game in those contests.

2016

Despite being overlooked in the 2016 NBA Draft, Finney-Smith went on to appear in 81 games for the Mavericks in his rookie season, starting 35 of those. He averaged 4.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.6 steals across 20.3 minutes. Finney-Smith's best stretch of the year came in the first half of December. Over a nine-game span from Dec. 3 to Dec. 18, he scored in double digits five times, averaging 9.3 points per game on 51.7 percent shooting -- including 45.7 percent from 3-point range -- as well as 4.2 rebounds. That stretch concluded with his highest-scoring game of the year, a 17-point effort against Sacramento. The 6-foot-7 forward collected a season-high four steals Jan. 26 against Oklahoma City, stuffing the stat sheet with 11 points (including two threes), five rebounds, two assists and a block. A willing 3-point shooter all year long, the University of Florida product took 2.4 threes per game and connected on them at a 29.3 percent clip. He was efficient with his free-throw attempts, hitting 75.4 percent. Finney-Smith set a personal best with 11 rebounds against Phoenix on Apr. 9. All told, he notched five or more rebounds on 15 occasions.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
2016
After a promising rookie season, Finney-Smith dealt with tendinitis in his left knee, which ended up costing him all but 21 games in 2017-18. It was a disappointing development for a player that was hoping to earn a bigger role in the rotation. When Finney-Smith took the floor, he averaged 5.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 three-pointer across 21.3 minutes, all of which were fairly similar to a year prior. He did shoot just 29.9 percent from three-point land though, so no improvement was made after going 29.3 percent as a rookie. Looking forward to the upcoming campaign, the Mavericks added Luka Doncic with the third overall pick in the draft and he's likely to get big minutes on the wing right away. In addition, Dallas brings back the likes of Wesley Matthews and Harrison Barnes, so minutes are going to be hard to come by. When considering the crowded depth chart, as well as the fact that tendinitis can resurface at any point in time, Finney-Smith will likely be an avoidable option for Fantasy leagues.
An undrafted free agent out of Florida, Finney-Smith surprisingly earned a spot on the Mavericks' regular-season roster, playing in 81-of-82 games. He averaged a respectable 20.3 minutes per game, but he translates more as a defensive stopper than anything, which resulted in Finney-Smith averaging just 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. He struggled with his three-point shot, going just 29.3 percent from deep, so he's not considered a legit three-and-D option quite yet. Looking ahead to the 2017-18 campaign, Finney-Smith should operate as a reserve at both forward spots. He could struggle to match his average of 20.3 minutes per game, though even if he did, it wouldn't mean much considering he's more of a defensive specialist. For that reason, Finney-Smith likely isn't someone to consider in Fantasy drafts.
Finney-Smith went undrafted out of Florida in June before signing a partially guaranteed training camp deal with the Mavericks. He's the prototypical 3-and-D wing, as he packs elite athleticism and a near-seven-foot wingspan to go with a 6-foot-8 frame. As a senior, Finney-Smith averaged 14.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists, while shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from the three-point line. Still, questions remain about his fit at the NBA level, even after a strong performance at the NBA Combine in May. He'll face an uphill battle to cracking the Mavs' final roster, but the team has a few open spots, and Finney-Smith's defensive abilities could confer him an advantage.
