Pat Connaughton

Pat Connaughton

29-Year-Old GuardG
Milwaukee Bucks
2022 Fantasy Outlook
Coming off his best season to date, Connaughton looks set to resume his role as a glue guy off the Bucks' bench. Having signed a three-year extension, he should slot into the second unit as a steady source of points, threes and steals. Across the 65 games he played in 2021-22, Connaughton put up career-best averages of 9.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 2.2 three-pointers. While the stats certainly don't jump off the page, he carved out a fantasy-relevant role at times, typically when his teammates were sidelined due to injury. It's hard to see him being anything more than a deep league commodity, although managers in shallower formats could consider him as a short-term addition if and when he moves into a temporary starting role. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Patrick Bergin Connaughton, son of Leonard and Susan, was born in Arlington, Massachusetts in 1993. He starred as a three-sport athlete in high school and thought he'd be a baseball player. He dominated on the mound at St. John's Prep in Danvers' Massachusetts, with collegiate offers rolling in from all over the country. That all changed after one "spectacular week" during an AAU Tournament in Florida which saw Connaughton push through 33 points and 20 rebounds in one game. In 2011, he won the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Massachusetts while also capturing the state's ESPN Mr. Basketball. After four years at St. John's, Connaughton took his baseball and basketball talents to Notre Dame and averaged seven points and 4.4 rebounds while compiling a 3.18 ERA in 10 starts for the baseball team. After being picked 121st overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 MLB Draft, Connaughton returned to Notre Dame for his senior year of basketball, serving as the team's lone captain. His 12.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game helped lead the Irish to historic heights, as they made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and eventually fell to Kentucky by just two points. Connaughton, a graduate of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business, is President of the With Us Foundation, which focuses on "creating access to athletics for all kids, affording them the opportunity to learn translatable life skills and values through the healthy and enjoyable vehicle of sports". More information can be found on the organization's website, withusfoundation.com. You can follow Connaughton on Twitter @Pconnaughton and on Instagram @Patconnaughton. Connaughton spent four years with Notre Dame as a two-sport star. In addition to playing basketball, the 6-5 guard pitched for the baseball team. He started 18 games as a freshman and contributed 7.0 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Fighting Irish. Connaughton put up at least 20 points three times, including 23 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over Marquette. He moved into the starting lineup for all 35 games as a sophomore and recorded 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds. The guard enjoyed a huge effort in a win over Louisville with 16 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists. The Irish moved from the Big East to the ACC for Connaughton's junior season, where he'd go on to average 13.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists while registering five double-doubles. As a senior, the guard led the Irish to the Elite Eight with 12.5 points and 7.4 rebounds. He was also named to the All-Midwest Region team after notching 16 points and 10 rebounds during a win over Wichita State.

Will return Sunday

ANALYSIS
Connaughton sat out Friday's win due to an illness, but he'll be back in the mix Sunday. The backup wing has made only two appearances this season, totaling 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists in 30 minutes.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could return vs. Philly?
GMilwaukee Bucks
November 17, 2022
Connaughton is aiming to make his 2022-23 season debut Friday against the 76ers, independent journalist Sean Wright reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bucks have been quiet on the topic of Connaughton's season debut as he recovers from a calf injury, so this is the first word of a potential return for the veteran guard, and this report has yet to be confirmed by the team. Wright also mentions that Khris Middleton could make his season debut Friday. Both Connaughton and Middleton will eventually provide a huge boost to this Milwaukee squad, which has already gotten off to a hot start in the early going.

For a third straight season, Connaughton held a consistent reserve role for the Bucks. In 22.8 minutes, he averaged 6.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists, and he notably shot 37.1 percent from three. His impressive health (69 games played) allowed him to rank 156th in total fantasy production. However, Connaughton will have more competition for minutes this season. Over the summer, the Bucks brought in George Hill, Grayson Allen, Rodney Hood and Semi Ojeleye. While Connaughton will continue being an every-game player for the Bucks, his role might not be as sizable as it was last season.
2019-20 saw Connaughton in a similar role as he'd occupied the two prior seasons -- one with Milwaukee and one with Portland. He averaged 18.6 minutes of run, 5.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Heading into 2020-21, the Bucks opted to keep Connaughton, giving him a three-year, $16 million contract. The high-flying wing figures to see a similar role in Milwaukee this season, though he'll have to compete for minutes with Bryn Forbes, Torrey Craig and Donte DiVincenzo. Ultimately, Connaughton's role probably won't be big enough to warrant rostering him in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.
In his first season with the Bucks, Connaughton contributed career-high averages in points (6.9), rebounds (4.2), assists (2.0), threes (1.1), steals (0.5), blocks (0.4) and minutes (20.7). Perhaps most impressively, Connaughton had the same turnover average (0.5) in 2017-18, so he nearly doubled his assist average this past season, from 1.1 to 2.0, while limiting mistakes. The offseason departure of Malcolm Brogdon figures to open up more playing time for Connaughton, which is precisely what happened when Brogdon went down with a foot injury in mid-March. In fact, in 24 games after the All-Star break, Connaughton raised his averages to 8.6 points (50.0 FG%, 38.2 3P%, 77.8 FT%), 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists versus 0.6 turnovers, 1.4 threes, 0.7 steals and 0.4 blocks in 26.5 minutes per game. There's no guarantee he'll be able to maintain that level of efficiency or production over the course of 2019-20. Still, his ability to stretch the floor as a shooter and make sound decisions with the ball bodes well for his role going forward.
Connaughton saw his role dramatically increase last season -- his third year in the association. During his rookie and sophomore campaigns, he averaged minutes in the single-digits. In 2017-18, he was handed 18.1 minutes per night. While not a volume scorer by any means (5.4 PPG), the Notre Dame product has been a solid source of threes, going 91-of-243 (37.4 percent) over the past two campaigns. Connaughton also stepped up when given the opportunity, averaging 9.0 points 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 minutes across 23.7 minutes in five starts, also shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from three in those tilts. The fourth-year man, who essentially split minutes between shooting guard and small forward last season, will be joining a relatively crowded wing rotation in Milwaukee. However, he should have the opportunity to fight for run between Tony Snell, Sterling Brown and Donte DiVincenzo.
Over the course of his four-year career at Notre Dame, Connaughton developed a reliable three-point shot, knocking down 2.4 treys per game as both a junior and senior. In addition to leading the nation in total spot-up points last season en route to 1.253 points per possession in those situations, the 6-foot-5, 218-pound wing was forced to man power forward due to the guard-heavy nature of the Fighting Irish roster. Responding with a career-best 7.4 rebounds per game and 36 blocks in 38 contests, he validated his athleticism with a 39-inch vertical leap at the NBA Combine in May. During this year's draft, his rights were acquired by the Blazers along with Mason Plumlee in exchange for Steve Blake and upcoming rookie Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Connaughton's future in the league was in question due to his status as an MLB prospect in the Orioles' organization, but he came to terms on a three-year deal, with the first two guaranteed, ensuring his experiment with professional hoops proceeds as planned. If he can wring out a role at some point, his skill set suggests that he could fill some of the long-distance shooting lost with the departure of Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum.
