Makwan Amirkhani
Mr. Finland

Finland

Gets job done with grappling
FeatherweightUFC
June 1, 2019
Amirkhani defeated Chris Fishgold via submission (Anaconda Choke) at 4:25 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night 153 in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Amirkhani seemed as though he was waiting on his opponent too much to open the bout but a nicely timed takedown in Round 1 was followed swiftly by a grappling exchange in Round 2 that led to the choke. Amirkhani is a good, athletic fighter but this isn't the first time he has been caught waiting on opponents, which makes one wonder what will happen in the face of a better class of fighter. He improves to 15-3 in professional MMA and 5-1 in the UFC as a result of the victory.

ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old Amirkhani returns to the Octagon after defeating Jason Knight via split decision in his last fight back in May, improving his UFC record to 4-1-0. He'll take on a relative newcomer to the featherweight division in Fishgold, a former lightweight champion in the Cage Warriors promotion.
Survives two early knockdowns to take split decision from Jason Knight
FeatherweightUFC
May 27, 2018
Amirkhani defeated Jason Knight via split decision (27-30, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Sunday in Liverpool.
ANALYSIS
This was a very competitive fight. It seemed that Amirkhani was the superior fighter early in the fight and he let Knight know by taunting him after each strike and from top position on the ground. That all changed when "Mr. Finland" was dropped twice in the last two minutes of the first round. Knight jumped in and tried to submit Amirkhani, but was unable to finish the fight before the bell. The second round was more even, and Amirkhani seemed more tentative. "Mr. Finland" was able to get two takedowns which likely swung the round in his favor. The third round resulted in more grappling. The early part of the round favored Knight as he was on the bottom but constantly threatened with submissions which forced Amirkhani to defend and did not allow him to mount any offense. Late in the round Amirkhani got another takedown and landed good ground and pound until the final bell which swung the decision in his favor.
Will fight Jason Knight in May
FeatherweightUFC
March 21, 2018
Amirkhani will fight Jason Knight at UFC Liverpool on May 27.
ANALYSIS
Amirkhani is coming off his first loss since joining the UFC and third of his career, as he was defeated by Arnold Allen back in March by split decision. He had preceded that with wins in 11 of 12 fights and will have a strong chance for a bounce-back effort against Knight, who's comes into UFC Liverpool with his first career multi-fight losing streak. With both Amirkhani and Knight winning the bulk of their fights by submission, it can likely be assumed that much of this fight will be spent on the ground.
Suffers first UFC loss against Arnold Allen
FeatherweightUFC
March 18, 2017
Amirkhani lost to Arnold Allen via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Amirkhani has an above average grappling game. He is used to finishing fighters early with chokes. He landed some solid takedowns early and went for several D'arce chokes. However, Arnold was able to defend. This early work exhausted Amirkhani. This allowed Allen to take over in the later rounds. This was Amirkhani's first loss in the UFC and only the third of his career. He will likely get back on track and continue to win fights in the UFC's featherweight division.
Makwan Amirkhani: Picks up another big win Saturday in London
FeatherweightUFC
February 27, 2016
Amirkhani defeated Mike Wilkinson via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Facing a much better fighter than he did in his last in his last fight, Amirkhani looked as strong as ever. He totally controlled Wilkinson on the mat and did just enough on the feet to keep the Brit honest. Undefeated at 3-0 in the UFC, Amirkhani still has the look of a potential future star. He has an intriguing back story and he gives a great interview. He is already 27-years old, so it would be smart for the UFC brass to push Amirkhani in the coming months.
