Fighting Yan Xiaonan in Chicago
March 25, 2019
Herrig (14-8-0) is scheduled to face Yan Xiaonan (10-1-0, 1 no-contest) in a strawweight fight June 8 in Chicago at UFC 238, Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com reports.
After riding a four-fight winning streak heading into 2018, Herrig lost both of her bouts last year via decision, most recently bowing out against Michelle Waterson at UFC 229 in October. Xiaonan, on the other hand, will return to the Octagon with momentum on her side after claiming her ninth straight win in November at UFC Beijing.
No-shows UFC 229 fight against Michelle Waterson
October 6, 2018
Herrig lost to Michelle Waterson via unanimous decision (26-30, 28-29, 27-30) at UFC 229 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Herrig's ultimate downfall was her poor cardio and her inactivity from top position. Entering the contest with a significant edge in upper-body strength over Waterson, Herrig failed on all five of her takedown attempts and was unable to keep Waterson pinned to the fence during the clinch exchanges between the two women. When you combine that with the fact she did little damage on the feet, it's easy to see why Herrig came up short. This appeared to be a good matchup for Herrig on paper but she simply failed to deliver. The 34-year-old has now lost back-to-back fights on the heels of a four-fight win streak.
Draws Michelle Waterson at UFC 229
August 9, 2018
Herrig will fight Michelle Waterson in a strawweight matchup at UFC 229 on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas, Damon Martin of MMAWeekly.com reports.
Herrig lost via split decision in her most recent fight against a top contender in Karolina Kowalkiewicz, which ended a four-fight winning streak. For both women, their last victory was of the split-decision variety against Courtney Casey. Herrig will now look to begin a new title run against Waterson, and will enter with height and reach advantages over the fighter ranked one spot ahead of her in the UFC strawweight rankings. Herrig holds a slight edge in striking volume, but still owns a negative striking differential, showing that there are still gaps in her defense. While neither woman likely has enough power in their hands to earn a KO/TKO victory, Waterson has been submitted three times in her career, so look for Herrig to attempt to use her size advantage on the mat.
Put a scare into Karolina Kowalkiewicz before dropping split decision at UFC 223
April 7, 2018
Herrig lost to Karolina Kowalkiewicz via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC 223 on Saturday in New York City.
On paper, Herrig did not have the level of striking acumen to deal with Kowalkiewicz. While she did drop this decision, she showed that she was able to hang in the stand up exchanges. She ate a lot of strikes, but she did land multiple power shots. In the final round, Herrig landed her best strike of the fight. Unfortunately, she chose to go to the clinch instead of continuing to fight at range. This loss stopped a four-fight winning streak for Herrig, who should remain a contender in the straw weight division.
Signs new contract ahead of UFC 223
January 23, 2018
Herrig will face Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a strawweight bout at UFC 223 in Brooklyn on Apr. 7.
Herrig (14-6, 5-1 UFC), who is in the midst of a four fight win streak, was rewarded with a new UFC contract heading into her match with Kowalkiewicz, Damon Martin of MMA Weekly reports. A win would likely put Herrig into title contention, though she'll have her hands full against Kowalkiewicz, who is 11-2 in her professional MMA career and coming off a convincing unanimous decision victory over Jodie Esquibel at UFC Fight Night 118 in October.
